Mining Rock Mechanics research projects
The research strategy is to develop a methodology for characterization, design, analysis, sequence and ground support of mining excavations.
This requires knowledge of the strength and deformational properties of the geological discontinuities, the in-situ and mining induced stress and how these combined will influence the rock mass strength and stability. The design of appropriate ground support is determined by the stress state around the openings and the properties of the rock mass, which may have been adversely affected by poor blasting practices. Additionally, as underground mines progress deeper into the crust, the stress state is such that dynamic failures can be triggered.
